The thing about poppies is that they’re kind of wild. They’re not hard to grow and sometimes they grow in soil that it seems like nothing else will except weeds, but you can’t relocate them. You really have to leave them where they are, and when you do, they burst and bloom with brilliant color every spring. To some, they symbolize regeneration and tenacity, as they grow so well in harsh soil and heat.
When I was undergoing IVF, my dear friend dropped off a pot of poppies to me. Because of that, whenever I see poppies begin to bloom in the spring, I am reminded of the way my little family began, against the odds, and beautiful just the same.
